Lecture 6 by Lars P. Mikkelsen, DTU Wind Energy, Technical University of Denmark, Roskilde, Denmark.

Title: Mapping local material characteristics into finite element models for predicting stiffness and compressive strength of glass and carbon fiber composites on the macro scale.

The mechanical properties of polymer matrix composites are highly dependent on local characteristics such as anisotropy, orientations, and fiber volume fractions. Based on a Jupyter notebook implementation of the structure tensor method, large volumes containing 100 000s of fibers those properties are mapped into finite element models. Thereby, precise predictions of the stiffness and compression strength values is obtained. The lecture will include hands-on exercise using the notebook implementation.

Biography: Lars Mikkelsen is associate professor and has over the last 20 years worked with numerical finite element simulations and experimental characterization of polymer matrix composites with focus on the wind turbine blade application.
